D4D Essentials, a new entry level training for disability support workers suits those working with people with a disability who have type 2 diabetes managed with healthy lifestyle and, when required, diabetes tablets. This program is different to many others on the market in two ways:

  1. The presentation is narrated by a presenter with a deep understanding of diabetes and disability.
  2. D4D Essentials offes disability organisations and NDIS participants with the opportunity to match the training to the diabetes training and monitoring specifics of each person with diabetes they support.
  • What is diabetes, difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes
  • Disability support for a healthy lifestyle that includes the importance of healthy eating, being physically active and managing stress
  • Treating diabetes with tablets
  • Identify and treat very low (hypoglycaemia) and high glucose levels (hyperglycaemia)
  • How to prevent, delay and monitor for diabetes linked health problems; Using the CHAP tool
  • The role of the diabetes team
  • How to prevent, delay and monitor for diabetes linked health problems; Using the CHAP tool

Organisations partnering with EdHealth are able to train their support workers to provide essential diabetes support for people with a disability and type 2 diabetes managed with a healthy lifestyle and diabetes tablets.

First the D4D Essentials module then if they are glucose monitoring add the glucose monitoring module. We train support workers to accurately CHECK glucose readings with a meter THINK about the reading AND know how to ACT when readings are out of the target range. This is an essential approach to supporting people with a disability with their diabetes if they are to have better health.

Each person with a disability is unique, and so is their diabetes, especially with the changing nature of diabetes over time. The D4D course has flexibility built into its core to deliver the ultimate diabetes training and support solution for disability support organisations and NDIS participants.

Support workers are trained around the needs of the person with a disability. Everybody’s diabetes will be different, dependent on:

  • type of diabetes
  • lifestyle management
  • medication options in place e.g. diabetes tablet/s, non-insulin injectables and insulin in all sorts of combinations
  • glucose monitoring – meter and/or sensor (continuous glucose monitoring)
  • insulin pump.

Support workers use, or support people with a disability to use diabetes equipment. There will be a knowledge and skills element to their training needs.

  • Blood glucose meter
  • Continuous glucose monitoring system (Libre 2 or Dexcom G6)
  • Semaglutide (Ozempic) or dulaglutide (Trulicity) devices
  • Disposable insulin pen
  • Novo Pen 4 or Novo Pen 6
  • Omnipod
  • Insulin pumps.

This makes the Diabetes 4 Disability course the most flexible and comprehensive in Australia because it is structured to address the way each person treats and monitors their glucose levels.

EdHealth is a one-stop destination for all things diabetes and disability in Australia!
