Diabetes 4 Disability Course

All support workers do this module. It provides you with a general explanation about diabetes, lifestyle management (diet, exercise + stress management), medication management, the associated health issues and health care professionals, role of the support worker and examples of strategies you can use to support people to be actively involved in their own diabetes care. This is the longest Module taking xx hrs to complete.

All support workers do Module 2a on Glucose Monitoring using a meter from a Practice Pack we have sent to your organisation. The theory and practice of blood glucose monitoring and how to encourage the active involvement of your client is addressed.

If your NDIS participant uses continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), training is added on the system they use (Libre 2 or Dexcom G6).

Take the time to check your use of the glucose monitoring equipment matches that described in the Procedures provided in these lessons. Your demonstration of your technique in the Online Skills Check (OSC) will need to match the procedure. If you also insert sensors, this procedure is discussed in an OSC.

The theory and practice of giving a sub-cutaneous injection of insulin, Trulicity and/or Ozempic is covered in these three modules. These modules are only included for support workers with a client using one oor more of these medications.   Brush up on your understanding of the medication/s and the procedure to inject them, with a focus on encouraging the NDIS participant to be actively involved in their injection, to the best of their ability.

People at risk of a severe hypoglycaemic (low glucose) event are often prescribed the GlucaGen HypoKit to use in an emergency. With longer ambulance callout times disability organisations are increasingly including this training for people prescribed insulin with type 1 diabetes or higher risk of very low readings. This module takes you through everything you need to know to use this medication safely, if prescribed for your NDIS participant.

The Online Skills Check is run by one of our Credentialled Diabetes Educators (CDE) to check the practical skills you refresh doing the D4D course. Groups of up to 3 people from your organisation’s training group are allocated into an OSC to have a technique check, using diabetes equipment and procedures from the Practice Pack we send to your Group Leader. This review makes sure we can correct any issues with your use of the equipment, talk about your NDIS participant’s diabetes care and ask any questions.

A range of Practice Packs of equipment are available for use in the D4D Refresher course. Make sure you have the equipment for the Module you are doing so you can practice with the procedures provided in the appropriate Lessons.

Work through the six lessons and quizzes (pass mark of 80% to complete the Lesson and pass the Module.

As you do each lesson, consider how the information applies to the person you support. Are they more capable of being involved in their diabetes care? How can you support them to be move involved in their diabetes care?

Each Lesson in Module 1 has a quiz, with the end of module quiz the one that counts for you to pass the Module. You can repeat the quiz twice to achieve the pass mark.

Once the group of participants from your organisation doing the Refresher Course have passed their Modules and Online Skills Checks (OSC), a certificate is forwarded to your Group Leader to record your achievement. They then send your certificate to you.

Any problems accessing the D4D course or issues with the way it progresses, reach out for support! It’s very frustrating when a glitch stops you in your tracks … that’s why we’re here to keep you moving through your D4D course.
